Our Electricity Network
Top Energy Ltd owns and operates the electricity distribution network that stretches from Northern Hukerenui all the way north to Cape Reinga. We produce 100% of the electricity we use and export excess electricity south through the transmission line, operated by Transpower south of Kaikohe, at voltages of either 110kV or 33kV. As the local lines company we transport power across the Far North to our substations and ultimately to homes, businesses, and community facilities.
Our Substations
We operate substations in the following locations:
Haruru, Kaeo, Kaikohe, Kaitaia, Kawakawa, Kerikeri, Moerewa, Mt Pokaka, NPL, Okahu Road, Omanaia, Pukenui, Taipa, Waipapa, and Wiroa.
These substations step down electricity from high transmission voltages to levels that can be safely distributed locally.

Other Parts of the Network
Our distribution system includes several key asset types that help deliver power reliably and safely.
Power Lines and Poles
These are the most visible parts of the network, commonly seen along roads throughout New Zealand. Given the rural nature of our region, much of our network consists of overhead lines supported by poles.

Cables and Pillars
Some of our network runs underground. These buried cables may run:
- from pole to pillar
- pillar to pillar
- or from a pillar to a property or streetlight
Although out of sight, these assets are essential to safe and efficient power delivery.

Transformers
Transformers reduce electricity from high voltages to the lower levels used by homes and businesses.
They may be:
Ground‑mounted

Pole‑mounted
