Pūrongo mahinga kāwei hiko

Working hard to ensure a safe, secure and reliable power supply for our customers now and in the future.

E whēke ana mātou kia ū ai te whakarato hiko ngita, hiko pūmau mā ō mātou kaiutu o nāianei, ā, ko āpōpō anō hoki.

1. KAITĀIA SUBSTATION 11KV FEEDER RECONFIGURATION : TE WHAKAHOU I TE HIKUAWA O TE WĀHI PUNAHIKO 11KV O KAITĀIA

We will optimise the use of the existing power transformer at our Kaitāia substation to create more connections which will increase the security of supply in Te Hiku. Construction is now underway with completion planned for the end of November 2024.

E whakamarohi ana mātou i te whakamahinga o te whitihiko i tō mātou wāhi punahiko i Kaitāia, kia nui anō ai ngā hononga, e whakapiki ai te ūnga o te tukunga hiko i Te Hiku. E hanga ana i nāia tonu nei, ā, ko te whakatutuki puano ā te mutunga o Nōema 2024.

2. KOHUKOHU SINGLE LINE REPLACEMENT : TE WHAKAKAPI I TE TAURA HIKO KOTAHI O KOHUKOHU

The single wire high voltage line running along the back of the Te Karae hills is almost 50 years old. We will upgrade this line to three wires for future network expansion and increased reliability. Construction of the second of three stages is planned for Spring/Summer 2024.

3. WHANGAROA & MATAURI BAY INTERCONNECTION : TE TŪHONONGA I WHANGAROA ME MATAURI

After commissioning the newly constructed Whangaroa – Matauri Bay 11kV Interconnection, we decided to upgrade a few sections of the overhead lines, which still have low-load conductors. The section of the overhead line to be upgraded covers 5.0km and involves fifty-five structures from Te Ngaere Bay to the junction of Wainui Rd and Matauri Bay Rd. The project is about to be issued for construction with completion planned for Jan/Feb 2025.

4. OPONONI FEEDER REBUILD : TE WHAKAHOU I TE HIKUAWA I OPONONI

Part of the Opononi network from Omanaia Road to SH12 was constructed in the late 1940’s making them over 70 years old. We are going to replace a portion of this line with underground cables. This will reduce the need for vegetation control and increase network reliability in this area. Resource consents have been received and the project has been issued for construction. Completion of this project is planned for February 2025.

5. RAWENE RECONDUCTORING STAGE 3 : TE TAUMATA TUATORU O TE WHAKAPŪKAWETANGA ANŌ O RĀWENE

Stage 3 is to replace the remaining 2km of powerlines from the intersection at SH12 along Rawene Road. This is the last stage of the Rawene feeder reconductor. Project is about to be issued for construction. Targeted completion during February 2025.

6. NGT EXTENSION : TE WHAKARAHI I TE NGĀWHĀ TRANSMISSION

We are upgrading the Ngāwhā transmission substation to increase the security of supply for the transmission connection from the Ngāwhā Power Station to the national grid. Tenders for civil and electrical construction works is almost complete. Construction is scheduled to commence during January 2025. Completion date planned for October 2025.

Why planned maintenance happens Monday to Friday.

The electricity network needs continuous improvement and maintenance to ensure our customers have a resilient and reliable power supply. We know it can be disruptive, but we plan maintenance during the working week for good reasons.

  1. To keep down the cost of power. If all maintenance was scheduled for the weekend, overtime would make electricity less affordable in the Far North.
  2. To manage fatigue. It’s unsafe for line crews to work a normal week, and weekends, and be rostered on after hours.
  3. Ensure work-life balance. Our people need time with their whānau, and for themselves

  2. Kia ngāwari te ruha. Ehara i te mea haumaru kia mahi ā mātou kaimahi wiki mai, wīkene mai anō hoki, me te mahi hoki i ngā haora muri atu i ngā mahi.
  3. Kia tāngaengae te mahi, te kāinga hoki. Me whai wāhi atu ā mātou kaimahi ki ō rātou whānau, mō rātou anō hoki.
