Consultation on Top Energy’s Contracting Services business is now completed following the announcement of a review in February.

Top Energy’s Chief Executive Russell Shaw says it has been a difficult time for staff while the company considered its options in response to the changing contracting landscape with the completion of major network upgrades, and other industry changes.

Considerable feedback was received during the consultation period, which was extended by a week at the request of the Etu union. The affected positions include management, field services, administration, construction and planning functions.

Mr Shaw says the company has explored different options, but unfortunately redundancies are now unavoidable and affected staff have been notified of the next stage in the review process.

While some roles will be transferred from Contracting Services into the company’s Network team and there are a number of vacancies that affected staff could be redeployed to, Mr Shaw says it is not possible to relocate all roles.

“We simply no longer have the same demand for our services with the completion of major network upgrades, changes to live line practices, and a reduction of available work in the Pacific.”

“We are seeking eight volunteers to accept voluntary redundancy, otherwise we will need to go through a selection process with a final decision by 20 April.”

Mr Shaw is clear that the employment changes will not impact the reliability of the power supply in the Far North nor will it affect the number of staff on standby.

“Our focus remains on maintaining a resilient, safe, and reliable network while exploring new technologies that will reinforce the network without requiring large scale infrastructure developments.”

The depots at Puketona and Kaitaia will remain open, albeit with reduced numbers.

Mr Shaw says he is grateful to have received offers of employment from other lines and contracting companies across New Zealand including North Power, Horizon, Delta, Electricity Ashburton and Rintoul Civil.

“Once we have completed this process we will facilitate any potential employment opportunities with these companies.”
