As an electrical engineer with over 25 years’ experience in the utility sector, Russell has significant experience in strategy, management, risk and operations with extensive knowledge of asset management, performance improvement and engineering. Prior to joining Top Energy in 2008, Russell was General Manager for Operations at WEL Networks where he led WEL’s Asset Management, Procurement and Field Services groups of over 150 staff. Prior to this Russell was a partner with UMS Group, a global utility management consulting group. Russell is a Chartered Electrical Engineer, has an honours degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, an MSc in Engineering Business Management and is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology and Engineering NZ. He is also a member of the NZ Institute of Directors.
Paul Doherty

Paul Doherty

General Manager Finance
As General Manager Finance at Top Energy, Paul leads the Corporate Services team which provides business support across the financial, risk management, regulatory compliance, commercial, property, procurement, human resources and safety aspects of the Group. He has over 20 years’ experience in finance and commercial roles in the Energy, Professional Services, Printing and Graphic Arts and Not for Profits sectors. Paul joined Top Energy in 2009 and is a qualified Chartered Accountant and member of Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand.
David James

David James

General Manager Contracting Services
David leads the Contracting group, managing the internal Field Services group of over 60 staff who complete maintenance and capital works on the network as well as providing specialist external services. With 44 years’ experience in the distribution sector, which started in 1975 with the Auckland Electric Power Board, David has extensive Distribution and Contracting management experience with a high focus on safety and project delivery. Before joining Top Energy in 2017, David was the Technical Manager for Downer in Tauranga coordinating the technical aspects of their electrical business throughout New Zealand. Prior to this David was the Eastern Manager for Tenix in the Bay of Plenty. David holds an NZCE in Electrical Engineering and is also a registered Distribution Line Mechanic.
Gordon Ramsay

Gordon Ramsay

Chief Information Officer
Gordon is responsible for managing the provision of information, quality and communications systems, developing strategic plans to support the Group’s information technology and process requirements and to assist and advise in integrating these plans into overall strategic plans. Gordon has over 30 years experience in the industry, which started at Bay of Islands Electric Power Board in 1988 as a radio and electronics apprentice. Gordon spent his formative years as an electronics technician, building, maintaining and operating many of the technical systems owned by the business, before moving into Information Technology team leader and management roles where he has been responsible for the design, planning and implementation of complex systems utilised by the Group today.
Ian Robertson

Ian Robertson

General Manager Network
Ian has 48 years experience in the electrical industry, including 35 years in the distribution sector, which started in 1984 with Bay of Plenty Electricity Limited. Ian has Distribution Network and Contracting management experience with a focus on the safe construction and delivery of network programmes. Prior to joining Top Energy, Ian worked for Powernet in Invercargill as the Network Maintenance Manager, managing technical, distribution and vegetation staff in the planning and delivery of maintenance and construction. Ian also worked for Horizon Energy Limited in the Bay of Plenty as the Operations Manager then Contracting Manager, managing faults, maintenance and project delivery. Ian attended WINTEC in 2006 and is a Registered Electrical Inspector.
Ray Robinson

Ray Robinson

General Manager Ngawha Generation
Ray Robinson is the General Manager of Ngawha Generation Ltd, part of the Top Energy Group. He joined Top Energy in 2009 and is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Ngawha Geothermal Power Station. Ray trained in the Royal Naval School of Marine Engineering and at City University, London where he gained an honours degree in Mechanical Engineering. Previous roles include serving in the Royal Navy Submarine Service and later moving on to work in various areas of the commercial power generation industry. His professional registration includes membership of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Society of Operations Engineers, and Institute of Plant Engineers. Ray is also a Chartered Member of Engineering New Zealand (Engineering Technologist).
